New role: curator of the Embassy of Inclusive Society at Dutch Design Week

What could be the building blocks of an inclusive society that really question current exclusion systems and our thinking patterns? In the coming period, the Embassy will investigate and explore what inclusive design can mean by bringing people from different backgrounds and expertise together to enter into a dialogue and learn from each other. The Embassy of Inclusive society is part of World Design Embassies, a program by Dutch Design Foundation.  One of the first activities we organised this year was the latest live panel broadcast at Pakhuis De Zwijger. I embarked on this journey as curator through a dialogue with Sadik Harchaoui, Marcin Karwinski, Charlotte Vromans and Frank Norbruis.

Launching the book: a place to stay, practising embedded design

After months of hard work and iterations, this unique book is ready to be shared with the world. On June 24th we will present the book in Veenhuizen for the first time, followed by a series of events and discussions about Embedded Design on different locations. Stay tuned!

Lockdown Brigade is in full swing

Students know what gives them energy: getting up on time, exercising, keeping up with social contacts and eating healthily. Yet, ever since the pandemic and the lack of physical activities it has become increasingly difficult to find this motivation within oneself. How can we give students a helping hand to really get started and find back the motivation and structure in their lives? This is the question we are addressing with this What If Lab. By means of challenges, spontaneous activities are stimulated, students can meet one another within the restrictions, and motivate each other to take action to break through the corona slump. Visit The Lockdown Brigade for more information.

Joining Bak fellowship 2020

Bak (basis voor actuele kunst Utrecht) fellowship program has started! Together with local creatives, thinkers and activists, I have been invited to join this experimental pilot program. We will be collectively researching forms of infrastructures and relationship between Bak and local communities.

Contributing to the publication ‘Explorers’

Design research studio STBY has released a new publication dedicated to mapping in design research. The publication was crafted together with researchers from all around the globe. Thrilled to see my contribution with the essay ‘Zooming in and out of complexity’ as part of it!

Joining Pakuis de Zwijger Livecast: Designing Cities for All

Pakuis de Zwijger embarked on an extensive two-year activity programme ‘Designing Cities For All’. In the context of the super-diverse city, how can designers contribute to the creation of inclusive cities for, and by everyone? ‘Cities of Belonging’, as we would call them, cities in which everyone feels and is allowed to feel at home. Not only in a spatial sense but also with regard to the digital domain and relating to the design of our public systems, services, and products.
I’ll be joining the third episode of a series of livecasts to share our work at De Voorkamer. The livecasts aim to dissect the concept of Designing Cities for All. The third edition, on Monday the 1st of March, will dive deeper in the notion 'For All'.

DoorVanVoor in Utrecht

The program DoorVanVoor by the Stedelijk Museum Schiedam aims to expand the understanding of co-creation in the cultural sector, particularly in the context of institutions. As a part of this program the museum initiaties tours to different places in Netherlands where co-creation is a key pillar. I co-curated and hosted the DoorVanVoor excursion in Utrecht, in collaboration with De Voorkamer, Le Guess Who, Metaal Kathedraal and Bak. By making a podcast after each tour, the museum keeps the conversation going.

Researching Embedded Design in Veenhuizen

I am working on a book that sets to capture seven years of collaboration between the Design Academy Eindhoven, the historical monumental village Veenhuizen, the prison in Veenhuizen, the province of Drenthe and KETTER&Co. With this co-created publication, all parties aim to shed light on the methods explored and the impact and potential of embedded design.

Storytelling for reflection on Inclusive Spaces

Which roles does De Voorkamer play in the life of different community members? How can storycrafting and storytelling serve as a tool for research and self reflection?
Together with VU, Mazreb and De Voorkamer I organized a short storytelling course. The sessions are part of the project Learning Crossroads for Refugee Inclusion of De Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (Refugee Academy)
